PepperPad 3 Pre-Happiness

We got our hands on a PepperPad 3 last week and we just got the go-ahead to write about, so we decided to do a quick pre-review discussion and go into a full review later this week. The PepperPad 3 is an Internet tablet with Bluetooth, WiFi, a full QWERTY keyboard, and a Linux OS. It makes a great kitchen/living room computer and is excellent for web surfing and email.

The reason I’m holding off on the full review is that I haven’t quite discovered all of the PepperPad’s secrets yet. The screen you see here is the main window with a set of applications. If you didn’t want to delve any further, you’ll find that everything you need is right there. However, this thing clearly has a few tricks up its sleeve. With a built-in hard drive and bright touchscreen, the PepperPad is a pretty interesting device and I can’t wait to explore its curvaceous curves further.

If it has audio in, load Skype on it…

Remote control for the TV, surf the net with WiFi, Skype for ordering pizza and never leave the couch again, except to pay the pizza guy, which i wish i could do with PayPal.

Hmm…pay the pizza guy with Paypal - somehow this sounds really familiar to me, like I’ve seen it or something similar done recently. Probably not, but I’m gonna check into it… :)

Actually though, CC is good enough for me - although with how much we all use paypal it would be convenient. There was this guy who moved across town, and one night soon after ordered pizza from where he typically did in his other house. Anyways, when he went to the door the pizza guy looked at him funny, then started reciting his old address. I think there’s enough people that abuse takeout that much that they could have an account of some sort…

I’m tired enough to actually put thought into this - sad.

how about some in situ photos? person holding it, sitting on the kitchen counter next to a soft drink can, on the coffee table next to the ny times, bedside table with aspirin bottle / gin bottle … i’m so sick of disembodied photos of things that are supposed to become part of my life

zorg: he does mention that the full photos are not here yet because he has not fully explored all of the pepperpads features. now I do agree with you lets have them, I suspect the product is too big for most of us to be instantally won over, there might even be a restiction placed by the vendor on what type of photos they could show. the (pre) review even says it be a good kitchen or living room computer nothing about good for taking round with me for daily use out of the home.
Well looking forward to seeing more details though I bet the price will make me really look at its short coming of not having a full keyboard and its size.

Any idea how much this is going to cost? If it ends up being too much, it would be hard to justify this over a laptop, just like the UMPCs that have come out so far.

I really want one of these things, I can’t wait to read the full review. I’m very interested to know how long the battery lasts, I haven’t been able to find out elsewhere.

Donovan, amazon has it available for preorder for 700USD in white, black or pink :)

Take the stupid thumbpads off and make it correspondingly narrower and I’d be very tempted.

ummmm yeah, at $700 you can count me out! laptops with Windows can be cound for way less, I wonder how long it will take for tablets to reach $700. hmmmm maybe even before this thing get to market.

Well it’s a lot cheaper than a Q1 (half the price at least here in the UK) has Linux instead of Windows which is a huge bonus with terminal goodness. Unlike a laptop i don’t have a kb in the way and i can thumb type if i need the keys when browsing, What’s not to like? can’t wait.

700$ is not bad really. Also, we do not know how full featured it is yet. As for a windows XP box for less, you might be able to find it, but it will be a slug, or worse, a loud paper weight.

Further more, this is the web. A lot of the people viewing the site are in other countries. Computer prices world wide are pretty ugly right now. If the system has even half the features of a full sized box, $700 is not a bad price at all. I mean, look at the new video game consoles, averaging 400$ for toys. :P

I’ve been following ebooks and tablet PCs for a while, and this has blown the socks off of anything so far on the price.

Everyone always says “Just go get a laptop!” I have a laptop - a rather nice one in fact, but its NOT an ebook. Its NOT a device that I can flip on real fast to check something. Its NOT a device that I want sitting in front of my TV so that I can look up some nagging fact on IMDB while I’m watching something.

And the open source on top of it is just cake. I’m a software developer and can’t wait to start programming for it.

I’ve had it preordered since August 2nd I think. Hopefully I’ll get it in a couple days.
