CrunchGear Gets Up-Close and Personal with Zunes

Cesar Menendez, our brother blogger over at Zune Insider, was nice enough to invite us to a little Pre-Zuning at the Souped Up Cafe, where he was holding a little meet-up for all the Zune fanboys in the Seattle area. In addition, he was nice enough to let us snap a few pics of the hardware (pics of the interface were a no-no, it’s still a work-in-progress) he’d brought with him.
We were expecting a singular Zune so we could get you guys some gear-porn (don’t pretend you don’t like it), but our man from Redmond brought three Zune’s, one of each of the launch colors. So below we have a few snapshots of the Zunes (we think there should be a better pluralization than “Zunes”, but we’ll leave that for later), and a hardcore video slideshow to keep you guys salivating until November 14, when, of course, you guys can get yours for $249.99.

Is there anything visually appealing about this packaging to anybody? I admit the brown has a nice retro/vintage thing going on, but otherwise these look like something out of a freshman ID class — what’s with the gaping seams?!

Not very impressing…brickish…

that was a waste of perfectly good YT bandwidth. Did I just spend 30 seconds staring at a pair of headphones there (somewhere in the middle?)
I demand my money back! Oh, wait…

Anyone else concerned that the UI is still a work-in-progress with 30 days until release?

Ugh. It’s a turd.
I mean, it’s a TURD.
What the hell are MS thinking???

Oh man. It better not smell like it looks.

Uhm, what does it say about a product when its promo shots are more than 60% blurred out?
Barakthecat (Who am I?)

uh . . . still a work in progress? Well, I guess they only expect to sell these three so they don’t need to ramp up production.

Take a look at the “video” shots. The video they composited in there doesn’t even line up well with the edges of the screen. I mean, did they even try to make it look real?

At least the song for the slide show was awesome!!!!

hey donn, i was there and that was the video playing on the screen. i see you’re very good at picking out photoshopped shots.

I was there also. The UI isn’t still underproduction…they just decided not to allow them to take video shots of the UI. I not only played around with it but I plugged my own headphones into it and watched a short preloaded NYC Skate Video. Let my tell you…it’s smooth. You can pick any pic as your background..on the fly. Album art looks awesome when playing. Screw the iPod. I’m going Zune….and don’t come whinning to me when you see my (admittably chunky) sexy brown Zune and complain about your under featured iPod. Quite hating and accept the fact that Apple is not the end all. We deserve better!

Great pix. Wish I could have been there. Thanks crunchgear.
How long did the wireless song transfers take? Did you do any complete album transfers?

My name says it all. MSFT is doing nothing more than trying to divert Apple’s attention/resources. They will spend millions and not care if Zune is successful or not. Why? Because MSFT believes they can do more harm to a competitor by challenging the competitors products. It has worked in the past.
To bad they haven’t caught to the concept of succeeding by building something better. But then making billions, over a 25 year period, by producing crap will do that to you.

I’ll never understand that ugly brown. Vintage is fine, but I would never want my brand new electronic device to look old and dirty.
The white could be better too but it looks cheap because some parts are still black, like a mishmash of parts. Why can’t they just have it be all white like an iPod?
If I ever get one it’ll be black.
I’d like to know how long wireless transfer takes too, and if it works with the other wireless MP3 players out there.

Anyone notice that they did not let any of the shots show the thickness of the device. They manipulated the situation to only show side shots when the Zunes were in their “protective case”.

Ed: there were plenty of shots showing the thickness, we just chose these photos for artistic purposes. If you watch the video slideshow, you’ll see several photos that show just how thick the Zune is. It is rather brickish, but there was no coaching on MS’s part, we took and posted the photos we wanted to. Next time, I promise to take special care to address your concerns.
But they are sexy pics, yah? :-)

It seems a little bulky.
I want to se size comparisons to other things like maybe PSP and DS.
I still want one though.
Can someone comment on if they thought it was a little bulky? (someone who actually held one)

Todd: check the credits below the vid. It’s “Radio Days” from Speaker Speaker, local faves from here in seattle. More MP3s on their site.

Matt,
My Speaker Speaker CD came in the mail today, but this song isn’t on there. Any idea where I can hear this song besides this Zune video. Tell the Speaker Speaker guys to come out to Brooklyn, I’ll find them some places to play.

Todd: Sorry for the long reply. The song is from their as-of-yet-to-be-released album “Call It Off”. I can’t say when it’ll be out, but I can say stay tuned to their website for info. As soon as they find a label to support it, you’ll hear about it.

Hey LPX,
Maybe Rommie’s British, in which case companies are correctly referred to in the plural.
Go figure.

Okay….I have the brown Zune, which is very sexy…so far it as been a love love relationship btwn the 2 of us. I got mine almost a month ago, and the only concern that I have is in regards to the battery power. It doesn’t seem to last that long. I charge it until it’s full, listen to it for about an hour and about 1/4 of the battery life is gone. It just seems like it should be longer. Oh…and how the heck do you get movies on the thing?
