Next Gen Console Review: The Good, Bad, and the Ug-Wii

Peter Suciu, a New York-based gaming writer, got his hands on both the Wii and the PS3 and will be posting live from the launch events for CrunchGear this week. Here is his take on the next gen consoles that you crave.

Last May at E3, Sony Computer Entertainment executive Kaz Hirai said that the next round of the console wars wouldn’t start until Sony says so. And that time has arrived, as Sony’s PlayStation 3 is about to arrive at retail – just days before rival Nintendo releases the Wii.
So let’s see if this cockfight is really on - we present a quick look at the Nintendo Wii.
We got both consoles last Friday and after taking the weekend to set-up, load up and play with the consoles, here are a few thoughts on what we loved and hated about Nintendo’s diminutive console.
Kids love Nintendo, even the foul-mouthed ones. Case in point: Eric Cartman couldn’t stand the wait for the Nintendo Wii and froze himself on the Comedy Central’s South Park, but made absolutely no mention of the PS3 – despite being upset last year that he missed out on the PSP. Did he make the right choice this time?
Five things to love about the Nintendo Wii:
1. The $250 price point is reasonable
2. The popular Wii Sports is included with the console
3. The controller does really make for an immersing experience with many of the games
4. The Mii character creation is a lot of fun
5. Zelda is a launch title, and possibly the best game in the series to date
10 things to loathe about the Nintendo Wii:
1. What’s with the 480p maximum resolution? No HDTV support? And why is Wii Sports presented in a 4×3 screen format? Come on, this is almost 2007!
2. No component video cable included so you end up with 480i resolution? Does Nintendo think is 1997?
3. No DVD playback support – we’re hearing a new version might show up next year! That sounds about right for Nintendo.
4. Only one controller comes standard!
5. OK the $250 price point is reasonable, but Nintendo could have done gamers a real service with a $199 console… and still likely made money!
6. Those four Nintendo GameCube controller ports that are tucked away on top suggest that we could see many games that use the innovative controller
7. Oh yeah, that innovative controller is far from precise for many games, and downright annoying a lot of the time.
8. The controller uses line of sight technology – apparently Nintendo does think this is 1997! They haven’t heard of Bluetooth?
9. Where are the multiplayer online options exactly?
10. Nintendo = Mario, but this year there is no Mario at launch!
Verdict: The Nintendo Wii is the logical next step for the company that is renowned for taking baby steps. At this rate we’ll have to freeze ourselves and wake up in the far future to see a system that supports HD resolution. The motion-sensing controller takes a bit to master, and it really does feel like a bit of a novelty device. However, the games are fun, and Nintendo has always said it is all about making good games, not impressing the tweakers.

Just what I’ve been saying since day one. Wii? Wiik!

wow.. .. just wow.. that may have been the single most ignorant and uneducated assesment of the Wii that I have seen to date. and i frequent the gamespot.com forums
just wow…
1. I for one am still stuck with a shitty old crt tv and have no need for all of that “HD era” stuff. Now I dont have to spend a thoundand of dollars on a new tv to experience the game the way it should be. And guess what the majority of the market nintendo is attempting to target is in the same situation as me…
thank you nintendo
2 avoiding adding an extra 30$ on the console price for something that is COMPLETELY useless to me and a majority of their market… thank you nintendo.
3. not increasing the cost of the system so I can have a 7th dvd player in my house.. no no. sorry. make that 9th dvd player in my house… thank you nintendo.
4. only one controller… thats cool. If I want another ill PAY FOR IT. just like you would have to PAY for it if it was included in a bundle..
5. no they couldnt have. and jesus.. it comes with a game (even if it is wii sports) and theres a flaw with pricing a system too low.. people think low pice=low quality. perfectly priced. thank you nintendo.
6. its called backwards compatibility, how would you play cube games again?
thank you nintendo
7. dont hate on nintendo because there are lazy developers who cant use the interface properly… oh.. and dual analog controls and “standard controllers” are far from perfect and very annoying as well. so. whats your point?
8. Ok. Score one for you.. but just 1.
9. its called perfecting their online system before releasing it to the masses… anyone remember the PS2 online.. wasnt ready…
thank you nintendo
10. nintendo does not = mario… mario is one of many flagship franchises.. but so is THE LEGEND OF ZELDA…. and wait whats this.. its a launch title!! aaaaaahh// yyyea.. a company taking time to perfect a big title like mario galaxy and deciding to spread out their heavy hitters so they have something to release in 07 as well…. damn. yea youre so right.. I loathe those things so much….
simply put. THANK YOU NINTENDO. for at least trying something new… baby steps.. is their blue ocean strategy really going in baby steps.. more like 2 giant leaps.. cube to DS.. DS to wii…
so thank you nintendo, for without you, I fear the video games industrys stagnant state would never be revitalized.

since i agree with all of your things to love points, i’m going to comment on some of your loathe points.
1. Nintendo isnt in a good position to take a risk with HD. to support HD, a more powerful console is needed. for a powerful console to be made, more money needs to be invested. more money invested, means higher console price. higher price means smaller audience. Nintendo’s audience needs to be large. and a cheaper console will help get it. as much as i’d love to have a HD Zelda, a cheaper console that attracts more people definitely sounds better business wise. however i do think Wii Sports should have a 16:9 option.
2. does Sony think it is 1997? PS3 ships with just a composite cable even though it is a super powerful HD machine. composite is in there because everyone who has a TV has a composite input. it would be too much expenses for Nintendo to add component in addition to the composite. and it would be stupid to just have component as not everyone has a component capable television. the good thing is component cables are available from day 1 in stores.
4. you are seriously complaining about just one controller? i hope you complained about xbox360 and ps3. i mean really you only need one. get a second when you feel like some multiplayer. it’s no different to the other systems. if it came with a second controller set, Nintendo would be charging $300 for the system. that’s a price that not many people will look at. also it would be too close to the competition.
8. do a bit more research. that line of sight technology is only used for the pointer function. if you had checked properly, you would know that all other data transfers are actually done by blue tooth. so yes they have heard of it.
9. Nintendo just arent the best at getting online quick enough. i mean you can connect online from day one for internet browsing and virtual console downloads. the games part will come soon. i think they’re focus is more on getting people to like the controls. online multiplayer is just a good addition to give games replayability. well not counting MMOs. but lucky no developer was planning one for launch.
10. Nintendo has not = Mario in a long time. well at least not just Mario. Nintendo’s other IP have become just as well known and nearly as popular as Mario. plus by not having Super Mario Galaxy at launch, Nintendo has essentially given the actual launch titles some breathing space. Zelda will be a big seller but it’s definitely not as widely appealing as Mario is, so it wont take away too many sales from the other games. whereas Mario probably would. it seems like Nintendo arent just thinking of themselves. they want 3rd party devs to be happy because when they are, they give more support.

As to your 10 things to hate…
1+2= This may be 2007, but the majority of people still don’t own HDTVs. Composite cables are the industry standard, including those the PS3 offers.
3- Who needs another DVD player? EVERYONE has one at this point…you’re not going to buy a $250 game machine for the DVD-playing ability when DVD players cost $10 at Costco.
4- Actually, I agree with you here. 2 Remotes would have been much better, making Wii Sports more playable out of the box.
5- How can the price point be something to love and hate? It’s lower than everyone else’s, so no complaints are logical here.
6-…would you rather it have not been backwards-compatible? As far as I’m concerned, developers can use whatever controller they like, as long as the game ends up fun.
7- There ARE options to decrease sensitivity, making this a non-issue.
8- It DOES use Bluetooth, genius…
9- I agree that it would have been better to have that at launch, so I’ll give you that. However, online SSB will rule all.
10- Zelda games are deeper than Mario games, simply due to the nature of the franchise.

i personally think the controlers look cool, but i think getting used to the new one will be challenging, for i like the ps2 controllers, and nintendo 64(old scholl, i know) :-)…anwayz they do use bluetooth, so go somewhere, as every1 sed zelda games are deeper than mario games. Last, i dont like how the internet hooks up for the Wii, ieee802.11….wtf is that? and if u aint got that u gotta use Wii LAN connection…ummm more stuff to by….y cant it just go to wireless internet like the DS? Altho my DS is having problems doing that…and nintendo couldnt help me with connection! im very mad, i looked forward to palying online :-( i give the new Wii a raiting of a 3.5 outa 5 from looking at they’re site and doing lots of research.

it shouldnt be more difficult to get use to than it was for the N64 and dualshock controllers. and then once you do get use to it, the improvement will feel better than what the traditionals had given when they were new.
also that 802.11 connection is Wifi. exactly the same way as the DS connects. you can even use the USB Wifi adapter that Nintendo released a while ago. but it sounds like you already have a wireless router so you can just use that and not have to buy anything else.
as for the score, well my personal score would be around 4 or 4.5
there is only one thing i dont like about the console and that is the power. i know that’s not their chosen direction and i agree with the direction they are going. but i would have liked to see a bit more power. i’m not saying it needs to have HD and the power that needs to go with HD. i’m just saying, more than 3x the gamecube would have been better. it would have helped differentiate between last gen and Wii graphics. especially for the launch games.
i also don’t like Nintendo’s pricing strategy. i dont mind the console bundle’s price but the prices for accessories and Virtual Console games is really pushing it.
aside from those issues, the Wii is looking to be a really good console and an actual contender in this generation’s sales.

This is the WORST review of any system I have ever seen in my life! Your information WRONG and BIAS about the Wii. First off, what system DOESN’T come with only one controller? Last time I checked, PS3 & 360 both came with one controller as well! Second, the controllers DO use BlueTooth technology! The multiplayer online actions will be available next year, dang. You have lost any respect I may have had previously for this site. I will warn people about how bias and misinformed it is. Wow, just wow.

So, basically, he wants more for less and has no clue what he’s talking about. Some points don’t actually make any sense at all (what is number 6 trying to say?), others are just ignorant (the controller needs line-of-sight in order to calculate the precise position and orientation of the controller - it uses wifi in addition to infrared; the difference between the two signals can be used to compute distance).

come on, nintendo should be keeping up with all of the next gen consols that are coming out, i mean not launching their greatest game when the console comes out is probably not the best decision out there. haveing a game console without a dvd player is like not having a brakes on a car these days. it needs to be there. out of the box it should probably have 2 controlers, nintendo is the king of muliplayer games and not having 2 controlers doesnt help out at all, and on the online dont get me started.

Let’s hit points 7 and 8. The controller is actually quite precise. I played Trauma Center: Second opinion with no problems at all and it’s actually quite precise with wii sports. Not holding the remote straight (a.k.a tilted to one side) on the bowling game will result in the ball drifting to the left or right, much as it does when your wrist isn’t straight in real-life bowling. The remote is really sensitive and takes some getting used to, especially with tennis. But just because your too stupid to figure out how to work it properly doesn’t make it “far from precise and downright annoying for some games.” And as far for it being a line-of-sight sensor bar, I found some things odd with this. My friend standing in front of the sensor bar blocked it from working, but when we wanted to test the range on the remotes, I left the room the wii was in, went into the corner of the adjacent room (so there was not a clear path from the remote to the sensor bar) and stood so there was about 15-20 feet and a wall between the sensor and the remote. The remote actually still worked, but I didn’t notice that I didn’t get any sound feedback from the remote. Also, why do people need the wii to play dvds? I have a DVD player for that, and even if i didn’t, I have an Xbox 360 and a PS2. What’s that? A fan-boy with other systems? Oh no!
As far as system launches go, I would have to give the wii the title for best. Nintendo actually shipped enough units for 70% of the people waiting at the store I was at to get one at midnight. The majority of those that didn’t were able to get one at another local store if they were willing to go to the store about an hour before it opened the next morning. I just hate when a system tries to make people happy at launch by having a respectable supply.

I don’t know why everyone still yips about not having a DVD player. The reason they chose to use proprietary discs with the gamecube and Wii? To prevent piracy. It is much harder to burn copies of gamecube discs than it is to burn ps2 or xbox games. Nintendo had huge piracy and licensing problems with the original nes and famicom systems (remember the whole tetris debacle?). They want to be the only one who can sell blank disks.
Seriously, a $30 dvd player will perform better than any game console anyways (it will cost about that much for the optional remote control). Besides, drives are mechanical and wear out eventually. Why not burn out your $30 dvd player instead of your $300-600 game system?
Just like the last generation of systems, each has its strengths and weaknesses. I bought my son a PS2 that burned out after only 2 weeks. We replaced it with the cheaper gamecube and have been very happy. For the sports games and adventure games he plays it has performed well. My nephew has an xbox and plays rpg and fps games. He also keeps the hard drive loaded with his music. It was the best system for him.
In the end, there will be buyers for all 3. You just need to decide which one will best meet your entertainment needs. The PS3 and 360 will be a better choice for older gamers (teen to adult) who want to play online and demand the multimedia features. As in the last generation, the technical specs won’t be key. People will buy based on game selection and blind loyalty to their brand.
Wii isn’t trying to beat the other two- they are going a different direction. I think it will appeal to younger gamers, as well as those who have become loyal to nintendo or their characters (mario, pokemon, link, etc.). Hard-line FPS or RPG players won’t be interested.
As prices go down, some people will probably own 2 or 3 different consoles.
Face it, the Wii is going to be hooked up to a lot of non-hd tv sets. Not everyone has dropped big bucks for a plasma yet. Besides, some of them will be set up in kids bedrooms (most of them don’t have HD yet either) not in the living room.

>The PS3 and 360 will be a better choice for older gamers
Interestingly, recent surveys have shown that it’s the exact opposite. Young children prefer the PS3/Xbox 360, while adults gravitate towards the Wii. The Wii simply has the wider array of games, some targeting adults, while the other two consoles mostly have hard-core FPS which target less mature gamers.
Dave (Who am I?)

Really? That is interesting. Where did you see those surveys?
I would think the nature of a Wii makes it more family/kid-friendly than the other two.
The PS3 and Xbox360 seem to be marketed at online FPS/rpg players. If you aren’t playing games like that, why would you need all the bells and whistles?
LKM (Who am I?)

>Really? That is interesting. Where did you see those surveys?
kotaku.com
>I would think the nature of a Wii makes it more family/kid-friendly
>than the other two.
which is precisely why younger kids prefer the more mature-looking PS3 and Xbox 360. Simplification: Children want to be like adults and appear mature. Adults don’t care, they just want to have fun. That’s why adults play fun games, even if they are “non-mature,” while children think the PS3 is cool, regardless of the games - as long as the console is big and black and the games contain lots of blood and gore.
I think you should be able to find the kotaku.com article about the survey, but here’s another link:
http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=345
“My older son thought the Wii was “stupid” when I first turned it on and he saw the remote. Then, he watched as I created my first Mii. When I handed the remote to my younger son, my eldest watched his little brother create HIS own Mii, and he couldn’t stand it anymore. With typical “too cool” haughty nine year-old arrogance, he took the remote and was instantly having a great time.”
Consoles targeted at kids don’t appeal to kids. They appeal to their parents. The actual “kiddie consoles” are the PS3 and the Xbox, not the Wii.

I agree with BlackBart……..But PS3 might be doing good in 2010. But by then Nintendo will prolly have a new system out supporting HD and all that good stuff and Sony will need a new system to compete, even though they say they won’t need to make a new one for years and years. And to those who say Nintendo always releases something better cause ooops….did it wrong the first time lets try it again. $249 once every three years is alot better than $599 (60 GB cause the 20GB isnt really worth it) for a system that will be outdated when Microsoft and Nintendo drop their next systems. And systems that release in 3 years will be able to do the PS3 technology alot cheaper than ya can now, so they should have other technology that wasn’t able before. So go Wii, and [XBOX (If you have good Home Owners Insurance, LoL).]
