They were found Monday by hired helicopters in fairly good shape, given the situation.
James had been apparently leaving a trail for rescuers, clothing and pieces of a map had been left at intervals. This conduct was in keeping with his resourceful nature: reports say that within the first few days of their ordeal, James had fashioned a siphon to retrieve gas from the tank of stranded Saab, which he used to keep his family warm, and made long-burning signal fires with pieces he’d cut from the car’s tires.
These survival qualities gave searchers and the public that was following the story high hopes. We, like all of you, were pulling for James Kim, and our hearts, thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family in the aftermath of this grave turn of events. Though it may be nothing in the way of consoling to those involved, it’s worth noting that our final thoughts of James Kim will be that of a hero, as well as a responsible father and husband. We hope that we should be even half as attentive and resourceful as he if we were to be in such an adverse scenario, men like him come along not often enough.

I saw this on the news last night. I thought I regonized that guy. That is really sad to hear. I’ll make a donation and I hope others do too.
This story of James and his family has touched a lot of hearts. If you visit the message board which was set up during the search, you’ll see there are nearly 4 thousand posts.
My thoughts are with the Kim family. I’m sure James would be glad to know that his wife and children are ok.
Ezekiel- I second that thought about making a donation.
This is so unbelievably tragic. What a terrible, awful loss. I hope Kati and the girls have a lot of loved ones immediately accessible. I just feel so terrible about this.
I’m sorry to hear that. Best of luck to James in Heaven and his family.
Follow-up:
Some friends of the family are accepting donations on the family’s behalf.

this is horrible, period, and i feel for his family being a new father myself. a father’s sacrifice for his family is unwavering and absolute under any circumstance…proved. not much else i can say that would make sense unless you know…
I held out hope until reading the article earlier today. So very tragic :(
I heard it on the radio home tonight. I heard wrong and thought they had found him alive. I was hoping for the best. This is sad.
This so sad and my heart and thoughts go out to the Kim family. I have a lot of respect for James and really enjoyed his videocasts on CNet and Crave. He was a real inspiration to many in the tech space and we have lost a great commentator, educator and community leader.
I’ve been following this every day for a week hoping that there would be a blockbuster movie ending with unsurmountable odds of success. Alas, my wife and I both cried at the news of his death. We have a 1 year old and I can only imagine the lengths I would go thru to save my wife and child. Imagining the conditions they were in and for the children and mother to survive, that is amazing.
He truly is a hero and will be missed dearly..
This is truly sad but wished at least that James could have known that his family is safe.
I’m thousands of miles away in Europe yet have followed the story of the Kims from the start.
I am so very, very saddened by this news. Though this man was a stranger to me, I wept this morning on hearing his body had been found.
My most sincere condolences to his family. At least Kati will have Jame’s spirit close to her everyday in the form of those two beautiful little girls whom his resourcefulness saved…
My heart cries for this family, those little girls and there mother.
James Kim you were an honorable man.
God Bless~
My heart goes with the grieving family. His soul is watching his family and knows they are safe.
There is no greater love than a man giving his life for those he loves.God bless you and keep you safe kim
