Reader Response: Festivus Week
- December 15th, 2006

As I mentioned previously, Reader Response for the coming week is going to be big. Rather than awarding one grand prize on Friday, we’ll be awarding prizes every day next week. And boy are they good prizes.
Since Festivus is next week, we’ve decided to pull out all the stops and give away some of our best prizes ever. So good in fact, that you’re going to have to take the jump to read about them:
This is how it’s going to work. We have five prizes for next week and one will be given each day. As always, Friday’s prize will be the biggest, but the prizes for Mon - Thurs are no slouches either.

We have four Sandisk flash drives to give away. Two 1GB Cruzer Micro drives and two 1GB Cruzer Titaniums. We’re going to be giving away the Micros first and then the Titaniums. They will be awarded each day.
Now, I was saying that we have a big prize for next week and I wasn’t kidding. The grand prize for next week is a brand new Nikon D40 digital SLR camera kit valued at $600. And as you all know, the D40 is a very solid camera. The kit includes the 6-megapixel D40 and a 3x 18-55mm lens. I really can’t begin to tell you all how excited we are to have one of these to give to you, our dear, dear, readers.

So with that, I open the gates. Comments are ongoing so comment often. Remember we’re looking for comment quality in addition to quantity. Just BE SURE to enter your email address in the form when you comment. I won’t try to track winners down, I’ll just move on to the next deserving commenter.
I want to thank Nikon and Sandisk for their gracious donations.
And don’t forget, if you enjoy CrunchGear, please be sure to favorite us on Technorati: http://technorati.com/blogs/http://crunchgear.com.

Holy crap a Nikon D40?! AMazing. I wish I were Crunchgear. But I probably wouldn’t be giving away D40s, rather keeping them for myself!
Hope this ups the comments though, they’ve been a little down recently…

My pleasure:
According to “Seinfeld”, Festivus is celebrated each year on December 23, but many people celebrate it other times, often in early December. Its slogan is “Festivus: a holiday for the rest of us!” An aluminum pole is generally used in lieu of a Christmas tree or other holiday decoration, shedding holiday materialism.

Ooo, shiny camera. And who doesn’t need more usb drives XD (I swear, those things are turning into the floppies of a few years ago–lose them, find them, what does it matter, you still have 20 more in the box!)

How I am going to save the world… if I get the camera.
1) Unpack the camera and sell the box on Ebay. Write in size 4 font that I am only selling the box. Profit $400.
2) Call up Nikon and ask them the price of the camera. When they quote 600, ask them if its in cents or dollars. Tape the conversation and start my own blog at nikonmath.blogspot.com. Make Nikon credit me for the difference. Profit $594
3) Start placing ads on my blog, stating that its for “bandwidth” costs, even when the site is hosted by blogspot. Profit - $200.
4) Sell TV shirts saying nikonmath.blogspot.com - $10 (who would ever buy them)
5) Start using the camera and take tons of pictures. Stitch them together and make a post on digg.com saying ” SUPER MEGAGAZILLION gigappixel image” with blatant spelling errors. Profit from ads on the site. Profit - $200
6) Teach others how to create their own stitched images. Make it onto Digg.com again. Profit - $200
7) Evolve the idea into a social website. Get picked up by techcrunch.com. Utilize words such as “social” “2.0″ “buy out” “start up” “milliondollarhomepage”, remember to use a buddylist and networking features. Ad revenue Profit - $2,000,000
8) Sell out to Google. Profit - 2 billion
9) Offer to smash the camera and obtain donations Profit - $600
10) Sell the broken camera on ebay. Profit - $400
Give all the money to a social donation site, where my virtual friends can see how much money I have donated. Save the world.
(take no offense, I was just being humorous. )

If I were to win the camera I would be the happiest lad in the land.
I’ve been looking for a new camera since my Kodak PAS is actually a PoS, and all my friends on Flickr is pressuring me into buying either Nikon D40/D50 or Canon XT/XTi.
I honestly don’t have the money for them, but I want the improved picture quality that comes from them… I aspire of being a professional photographer/plastic surgeon once I’m older and actually out of high school… Those will be the days.

Wow, that is one fine looking camera. I’ve been looking into getting one as a jump start to my new year’s resolution of going outdoors and taking photos. I’d love to be a pro photographer–such an honorable and interesting profession.
Anyway, is there a general consensus on whether or not Digital Rebels or the Nikons are better cameras in general?

Sounds like a great giveaway to me - and I’d obviously love to win the Nikon to use for college work and all of the side-experiments I’ve always wanted to shoot. :D
Good luck to all. :)

Great prize! Something I would love to have because I’m embarassed to say that I don’t have a digital camera. My son decided to use it as a bouncy ball. As a fledgling tech related site, we can only hope to some day rule the world like TechCrunch! Hey, a little brown-nosing never hurt anyone, eh?

Hey, I would be happy to win one of the flash drives. However, what do you do if you break the USB port in your laptop? Can the USB port be replaced? It was a flash drive that was plugged into the laptop that broke the plastic guide in the usb port when something hit it. Let this be a lesson to everyone, be careful with those flash drives.

Wow, what an extraordianry coincidence.
I get my camera stolen at a club _and_ I give up on Engadget’s readership at the same week, and along comes this little promotion. Kudos to the authors, you’ve definately earned my interest as my day-to-day tech blog

I can feel God leading you to give me the camera. Yes, yes, I see your hands. The karma is strong, so go ahead and pack that up and send it to a poor, humble country preacher who can’t afford such a nice setup.

Well, I was looking at a new Canon Xti for myself this winter, but, thanks, the Nikon will do just fine. Shoot me an email and I’ll let you know where to send it. It’s OK, you don’t have to wrap it or put a bow on it. Don’t go to any extra trouble. You want a copy of the first picture I take with it? Sure, no problem.
I like that it’s compact, cuz I like to stick a digicam into my backpack when I hoof it around town. I’ll look forward to having it handy for those spur of the moment shots one can only capture when one is equipped. The 3x zoom is a little stingy, but hey, the price is right. At least I know I’m getting Nikon quality optics, and that’s more important. Any photographer will tell you, you don’t need all the bells and whistles. It’s more about framing the shot. And of course, with digital, it’s easy to shoot off a couple dozen extra shots from different angles and settings, just to make sure you got the shot.
Yeah, the little Gig drives are cool, but I don’t need them, thanks. Seems like I have hard drive space galore any more, and whenever I need to move files less than 10 MB, I just gmail them to myself.
Thanks for thinking of me, Crunchgear dudes.

Hey TechCrunch, why not let your readers submit ideas and determine the ones they like the most, instead of you doing it. Like this: http://www.tricycle.zooleo.com
You would need to give up some of your power and control, but it could be healthy . . . .

Wow! First I win TIME’s “Man of the Year” and now a chance to win swaq actually worth something!
Things are looking up!
Truth be told, I’d probably end up regifting the prize to some poor homeless street urchin such that they’d have a chance to change the world…

Here’s the thing about Festivus: Am I selling out my Lord and Savior Jesus the One and Only Christ by leaving this comment in hopes and prayers of getting some hot new techie gifts that’ll turn me into a muli-million dollar podcaster?
I hope not! I loved Jerry Stiller delivering his lines in those Seinfeld episodes. “Serenity now!!!!” And though I’m black, I still love Kramer…
But about the sell-out issue? I’ll let my Messiah decide…

I think that you should give ME the Camera. It would be the perfect companion to my CoolPix5000 and my CoolPix7600. I take pictures of new Monuments (I call them signs) for a major Insurance Company. With the Nikon D40 and the other two around my neck I would really look impressive (as in I knew what I was doing) So just go ahead and send it my way:)

“Remember we’re looking for comment quality in addition to quantity,” heh? Okay, so maybe I should explain my above comment, which may have made me sound like a doh-doh head.
I’m so busy pitching so many products via my blog (gotta stock up on that Amazon associates revenue to earn enough to buy my hubby his own laptop so he’ll stop breaking my blog-posting flow and kicking me off our PC) that I have a point-and-shoot camcorder on my brain.
That’s why I wrote about becoming a multi-million dollar vlogger. I realize that the D40 and flash drives will help play a role into my dream, albeit in an ancillary type of way.
Happy wading thru all these comments.

I’ve got a d50 and it’s changed my life. No more trips to the local camera store. Easy deletes. Lots more pix with no guilt. But there’s that storage problem. As in I need some redundancy (my paranoia flares up even with old school film, and I want to stick the negatives in the vault! what if there is a fire! a thief! those hundreds of pix of my little one, how could one resist them?)
so hey, give me another camera for more storage - or even one of those flash drives. save my child’s mug for posterity. cause what else can a mom do?
