Badassery: Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife
by Blake Robinson on December 18, 2006

I have a fascination with knives. Not really sure why, but there is something I’ve always found appealing about them. Unfortunately, I have about as much coordination as a blind quadriplegic, so knives and me really don’t splice. Nevertheless, that doesn’t stop me from oogling this Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife from behind the safety of my monitor.

It’s equipped with many of the tools necessary to rescue yourself or others from flaming buildings and sinking cars. The knife includes a heavy duty blade with external blade release, oxygen tank wrench, safety hook cutter, window punch and an over-sized thumbstud. It also includes a nine piece tool kit and a heavy duty pocket clip.

It has an MSRP of $120, but you can get it now from the Gerber site for $90. Don’t cut yourself (or others).

Mcguyver would be proud of this knife, add in a piece of string and he would have enough tools to build a small plane with enough spare time to make a parachute to get away from any situation!

Somehow, every time I look at the headline I find myself thinking of that other Gerber company, and the images just don’t fit. :O Unless it’s a new way to open those baby food containers.

I have a similar hunting knife that I got from a friend on my birthday. The stupid thing sits on my desk and sometimes when I run out of utensils, I end up using the hunting knife to cut my food. Ah the laziness.

I bet 90 percent of the people with these type of knives never ever use them for any of the purposes that they were intended for. Oxygen tank wrench?!?

What I need to know is, “does it have a bottle opener” ;-)

Amit

And does it have a toothpick? tweezers? Didn’t think so.

Hey, Blake, if you like that, maybe you’d like this one from Kershaw.

Check out their tactical knives by Ken Onion. They also have a folding steak knife for when you’re out on the town. That’s in their Shun Classic knives.

For $120 I would want better than 440A steel.

I had to ask the question…
Will it blend?

No corkscrew?
It may save your life, but will it save your party?

This is a boy scouts dream. :-) If Only I had the money.

The better question to ask Amit is… will it get past airport security? You can run down the 50+ things you can do with it without ever mentioning its a knife…

This knife has no bottle opener, the tip of the knife in not sharpened its dull, the blade is meant to cut your out of entanglements or seatbelts deflate airbags of mangled cars, the oxygen tank wrench is to turn on the bottle for the oxygen patients might need to survive, there is a window punch so I can smash out the window of a car, crawl inside to save a life, all while the car is being torn apart around us in order to get you out as quickly as possible, there is also a rescue hook so I can remove particles of clothing to access and control arterial bleeding or major trauma, lastly the knife is made of 440 steel and is thick enough to pry myself out of sticky situations or rescue a trapped child in a car by popping out the door lock. P.s. I got my hinderer for 68.00, small price to save your life huh?

I am looking for what you describe, was looking at the Victornox Rescue,am still looking, But, I liked your answer. Yup, great reply
