Merrill Lynch Claims 30% Of US Households Will Have A Wii By 2011

Looks like Merrill Lynch is the latest company to be added to the Nintendo payroll. Analyst Yoshiyuki Kinoshita is now claiming that by the year 2011, 30% of US households will own a Nintendo Wii and a third of Japanese households will own one as well. The predictions come as the Wii has surpassed expected sales and doubts that the console would be gimmicky. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that the PS3 hasn’t sold near as many units as the Wii, due to shipping limitations.

So 30% of US households, eh? That’s a pretty ambitious claim. Too bad it’s all a bunch of Crap with a capital “C”. Why? For starters, in 2005, the average household income determined by the Census Bureau was $46,326. Let’s say that household has a husband, wife, and child. These people don’t have the money for a Nintendo Wii + some games + a broadband internet connection - they need their money for real expenses like a mortgage payment and cases of Keystone Light.

Don’t give me your silly Japan-speak about how 30% of people in the USA are going to buy a console created by a Japanese company. It’s completely biased! I realize Japan makes all our consoles, and that’s fine, but don’t go predicting sales for us Americans. Maybe when Wii-fever settles and the pandemic ends, people will actually start using logic to calculate projected sales.

The guy that posted this is a retard, PS3 hasn’t sold as many units because of shipping limitations?, let me correct what i said, you are blind AND retarded. A great deal of stores have been sitting on playstation 3 stock that won’t sell for a long time, PS3 hasn’t sold because of shipping limitations, it hasn’t sold because people don’t want it….

Realize that and DEAL with it.

Wow, I want my 30 seconds back. What a silly and poorly thought out addition to crunchgear this turned out to be.

So if Merrill Lynch has used the wrong projected sales analysis to come up with bloated projected sales, what sales analysis have you used to come up with a lower number, and what number do you think is more realistic? Do you have a degree in journalisim, or are you still in high school? True journalist use facts to support their arguments. You should be ashamed.

All consoles are made by Japan are they…. what about the 360. What a stupid biased article. You would have been a good journalist in early 80’s communist Russia.

PS2 is owned by 25% of US households.

In 5 years time, Wii will be cheaper than PS2 has ever been.

I’ve brought my Nintendo Wii to several friends and family gatherings. Each time more than half of the people attending start think about getting their own. My inlaws who are in their late 50s and purchased a Wii have had their ADULT friends over for Wii parties.

The Wii comes with viral marketing BUILT IN. You bring a Nintendo Wii to a friends place and immediately people are wondering where they can get their own. When they find out it’s so cheap AND it comes with a game, they can’t believe it.

If you think the Wii is successful now….you just wait for Nintendo to start releasing a line of games along the lines of their Touch Generations series for the Wii…

This is the first time I’ve ever read Crunch Gear and will certainly be my last. Not sure about this monkey who wrote this article, but his bias against the Wii is obvious.

you underestimate people’s abilities to justify what they want over what they need. Many of the ‘poor’ in america have cable, consoles, large tvs, name brand items, and etc. While there are those who truly have a hard time paying their bills, poor in america also includes those who don’t live as comfortably as they’d like.

Yeah 30% who knows? thats alot, but possible. One thing I cant beleive is how some of our friends would always bash me and my bro for having a cube and they loved their ps2 and would talk about the allmighty ps3 and now all they have been doing is coming over to play our 360 online and our wii(wii sports, metroid, and soon ssbb). They all are trying to save enough to buy both(wii, and 360) and to get some fast internet. Thats about 10 friends that are hardcore gamers, only 3 of them have bought both. Not only that but my mom plays wii sports with us and so have my wifes ants, uncles, and cousins, these are people that never play games and they love to come over. Instead of going bowling one night we all stayed and bowled at home.
