DiscEraser: One Swipe For Total CD/DVD Data Destruction

$12.99 DiscEraser.

The device couldn’t be more simple. You just open it up, pop the disc you want to destroy in, close it and drag the slider on top back and forth a couple times. In quite literally seconds all the data on the disc is made unreadable.

I just put them in the microwave for a few seconds…i doubt that’s environmentally friendly or 100% effective…but it sure looks purdy!

I’ve also tried cutting and scoring discs (on the reflective side) but that’s pretty messy, you wouldn’t want to do that indoors. Looks like if you want a quick and easy way to destroy your CDs, this is perfect. I know my local recycler accepts intact CDs. I will order one and see how it goes :)

I’ve been waiting for a product like this. If you’re in the real estate business, you can relate to me. I have all contracts backed up on cd. Though sometimes I make mistakes and can’t erase data once burned on, and I can’t throw it away because of confidential information from my clients. I own an electrical shredder which says it shreds cds. Though it’s quite annoying when I use it since it is really loud. And I’ve already gone through 2 in the past year. I think they broke because of shredding discs. Shredding paper seems to be easier for the machine, but when it shreds the cds, the machine won’t last long (well, based on my experience). I’m hoping with this new disceraser, my shredder will last longer for paper shredding, and then using disceraser for cds.
I’ve ordered one of these disc erasers, so I’m very excited to give it a try. Shredders are very expensive, so disceraser may be the best thing for my entire staff of agents to use. Very cool idea!

I create Websites, original music, and digital video, that I store on CDs and DVDs. In the past, I have used a permanent marker to disable unwanted discs, but rubbing alcohol can easily remove these marks and allow someone to retrieve my data. I have also tried microwaving my old discs, but my microwave doesn’t seem to like this method, and neither does my wife! So, I bought a Disc Eraser last month, and I am very happy to have it. It saves me time, and I know that my data is completely secure.

Interesting to see just how deep the scratches are. If they aren’t deep enough, they could be sanded and polished out… Just something to think about. You might want to use this thing on both sides of the disc just to make sure…

Shaun, these grooves cannot be sanded out. I tried and then put it in three different optical drives to see if it would work and the drives just spit the disc out.

When you drag the slider across the CD, does it make a nasty scratching sound like nails on a chalkboard?

The foil (which holds the actual data) under the label is very susceptible to expanding and shrinking….

…and I love using my propane BLOW TORCH!! :D

Grinding is the only way to completely remove data short of burning the disc which by the way produces cyanide. Burning or grinding is the only method that the NSA will approve. With a DVD the the disc has to be split to get to the information layer, so this product would be completely useless. This is our business and I just wanted make sure that people knew this information, this has been proven scientifically. I would be happy to send CD Rom for Dummies to anyone who wants it.

Thanks

I have 1200 non sellable DVDs due to manufacturing error. I realize the info, readable on the data side can be erased, my biggest concern is the photos on the photo art side. The subjects of the photos have signed release forms to use their photos, however, I feel personally responsible to not have anyones photo end up in a landfill or anywhere than origianlly intended. Shredding would take care of the photo, but, then what to do with the shredded remains? Would appreciate feedback.
Thank you. Justine F

hi there, I have never tried to use the shredder for getting rid of the CD’s, the whole thing must have been an unique experience. Basically we can use shredders to protect our id from theft and for destroying financial documents.
but when it comes to cd’s you can use the disk eraser or you can always take a magnet and swipe it across your cds. not sure if the last oner would do the trick but you can always give it a shot and see what happens, of course do not forget to post it here.
