Just heard some welcome news on NPR right now. The company setting up Philadelphia’s city-wide WiFi project has completed a 15-mile-wide test north of the city and word is that the system is ready to be deployed to all of Philadelphia. By Q3 of this year, the network should be setup so that anyone in Philadelphia city limits can acquire wireless Internet access for on the cheap.
No price has been set, but last year, numbers of $10 a computer were being thrown around. I’ve also heard $15.95 somewhere, though in the end it will be under $20 for broadband-quality wireless net access. This is the home-strech Philly. Get this WiFi project done already.

Putting on my EarthLink employee hat, I think it’s great that the Philadelphia coverage is going to be tons better. Hopefully the residents and visitors will find it more useful.
