iPhone Problems For Businesses

The iPhone’s inability to sync with current corporate e-mail servers means trouble for the 9-to-5 crowd. Based on a report from the Wall Street Journal, the only known solutions to the problem at the moment requires changes that compromise the security of e-mail servers or expensive overhauls. A suggested step for Apple would be to provide software that would allow the iPhone to act as a virtual Windows Mobile or Blackberry device, we know that’s not happening. Oh well.

It is NOT a business phone, it never was and never will be. So what is the problem. Keep using you crappy business phones that fulfil your nieche needs and stop asking for the iPhone to be geared towards your miniscule fraction of the mobile phone market.

I beg to differ. Business phones are not a “miniscule [sic] fraction of the mobile phone market.” If they are, then what accounts for the huge success of things like Blackberries and Palm Pilots? These devices were geared towards business users, and look at the success that the Blackberry has obtained. It’s a ubiquitous part of business culture.

The article’s premise is bullshit. It’s only a problem if you are stuck with Microsoft Exchange and have incompetent admins who don’t know how to set up IMAP and SMTP securely.

Granted, that may describe a lot of businesses, but it’s not the iPhone’s fault.

I don’t think the iPhone will catch on in business, but that’s because it’s a closed platform with no proper SDK.

The majority of smartphone buyers ARE indeed business users. It is by far NOT a small fraction of the market. Also, no one is trying to make the iPhone be what it is not.

The real problem

Is that most of business users are going to buy the phone even if the companies can’t support it. Also if you read the actual article, it says that setting up for the iPhone would cost time and money.

Of course it comes down to a simple solution “don’t buy it” but that’s not up to businesses to decide. Whether they want to or not, employees will still buy it and THAT will cause trouble.

The “other” real problem is that business can’t put iPhones on their corporate accounts, each iPhone has to be registered under a personal account, no Tax ID numbers just SS numbers to make this anything more than a big iPod.

We’re getting quite a lot of questions about the iphone at FixYa.
People aren’t sure how to use it yet.
Apple made a beautiful baby here , but it seems like maintenance is not going to be easy.

Wow, look at all the macfags jumping in to defend the phone when it doesn’t work.

This is bull. Went into work today, handed the iphone to my IT administrator, and in 5 minutes he had me hooked into my account on our Exchange server. FIVE MINUTES. Works great!

The iPhone is an exceptional business tool. Lucky for my firm, our entire platform is built on the Mac environment. Unlike most mid to large sized companies, we use POP accounts for our email, giving employees ease of use in setting up their email with the two cell phone carriers we use (AT&T and Verizon Wireless). This allows for more productivity when away from the office.

I’ve used the Blackberry 8800 and I don’t think there is ANY comparison. The iPhone is unquestionably easier to use and navigate. And provides more in the way of maintaining and keep track of my hectic schedule. For those of you who think Phone is NOT a business tool… Think again. It is not only a business tool, but an entertainment module for those of us who like to lounge on the beach and think of ways of being more productive.

TWO thumbs up to Apple and their new revolutionary iPhone.

You applesauce-brained worshippers of everything Apple are so funny and so predictible. Apple makes crap. Plain and simple. The amazing thing is you people buy that crap, pay 3 times as much as what you would for good stuff, and then sing the praises of apple and how anyone who doesn’t use their crap is an idiot.

The iPhone is a cute and very expensive toy. Apple has never made a decent computer, interface, network, or toy that fit into the corporate environment. Enjoy your cute little toys and quit pretending that they are anything more than that - toys.

Well why waste time worrying about iphone not syncing with corporate email servers etc, the iphone account cannot be established at all on a business account to start with. A PERSON WITH A CORPORATE BENEFIT FOR THERI PHONE VOICE SERVICE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THIS PHONE FOR THEIR BUSINESS PHONE—They will be forced to set up a bran new account that is separate, that they are personally responsbile for, and will not be able to take advantage of the service their company already provides them with. So, why worry so much about what it wont do for corporate interfacing….you cannot even have the phone on your work account AT ALL. You will be buying yourself a new account with all the financial inefficiencies that promises to bring. I believe that the phone is actually an excellent product with all the quality we have grown to love about apple products—but getting it activated and your service with at&t may be a hellish nightmare you may not be willing to take on, and I really am puzzled why apple, who always seems to make great choices, is allowing the purchasers of their product to have such a miserable time trying to simply get activation and their service account—with at&t not abiding by their own advertising claims of being able to add the iphone to your current account—they have a laundry list of all the “why we cannot do that” once you have been misled to buy the phone and are sitting with a 600 dollar phone with no chance of getting activation or service in sight. This is the most severely disatrous launch of a phone from the standpoint of the service provider and i think apple is going to take a huge blow to their good name for their customers to have such tremendous trouble to be able to even use a product they have spent time and a lot of money to get. I hope this is helpful.

I added the iPhone to my existing AT&T account on the day it came out. No problems. Hooked it up to my work email and home email in the first 15 min of having it and had the media I wanted on the thing synced shortly after. Not everyone had problems. BTW, I did not stand in line like all of the other morons. Walked into AT&T store, dropped my $$$$$$$$$$ and walked out. For those of you who hate Apple and iPhones, please don’t buy one. Those of us who do like their products really don’t want you to have one anyway.

not being a geek, and not very tech savey , i would like to know more about the iphone strenghs and weakness before i contemplate buying a black berry or an iphone.

What i would like to know, what does the iphone do different apart from being good with that picture thing as apposed to a black berry .

im an indipendent motorcycle courier , so any investemt in the latest tech is exspencive for me.

I heard it has gps, how does the gps stand up to garman or megelan , how ever it is spelt ?

Sorry to ask these questions in a flame war type place, but i figured out that , asking questions in somwhere like this might lead to less bs about the product .

no im not gonna rush out and buy 1 ,, i would just like to know a little bit about them , before i make a choice .

BERTO,
I will bet Steve Jobs does not care one bit who buys his products.

…not being a geek, and not very tech savey , i would like to know more about the iphone strenghs and weakness before i contemplate buying a black berry or an iphone. Too bad it doesn’t have a grammar and spell check mode dude.

…a flame war type place. With plenty of ammo to go around.

I’m not going to be getting on of these SOLELY because I can’t sync my e-mail. I’d still have to have my blackjack or blackberry…so what’s the point? My nano and blackjack take up less space in my pocket than an iphone and a blackberry.

Until they create a version that syncs my e-mail, I’m not getting one. The “apple” part here, is it’s downfall.

But, on a more serious note, Apple is a fine niche company with the reputation for high quality. More and more problems are occurring with the iphone due to software conflicts they were surely aware of i.e. Duke University network
Many of the hardware manufacturers are becoming like the software manufacturers, in that they are releasing products that are in no way ready for the consumer market. I have never been a,” first in,” buyer simply because the prices drop drastically and the quality concerns are usually dealt with once a product is in the market for awhile. I also have been involved in the interconnect component market to be able to speak of this first hand.
Once they get this product right, I will probably get one. This also breathes new thought processes into a very stagnant sector.

Obviously, some of the Apple people are in need of grammar lessons; along with increasing their meds.
Also, the problem at Duke Univ. is now being blamed on Cisco, not the iphone…updates as they become available.

Well guess there aren’t s many believers in the iphone and its stratospheric price. Great… now I can get one at a fair price. But wait, hackers have gotten into the iphone; oh no Apple products will be like everyone else ravaged by viruses. How do u feel now TECHNIOD…ya LOSER!

I guess I am just wondering how old everyone commenting on this is? Many posts are about work phones so I feel like everyone must be adults. Take a second and read over this chain of posts. Really take a look at richard beninya. Man, that guy makes himself sound super smart.. This makes me so depressed I am a human.

It is funny people take a side between the PC vs MAC battle. Why is it people are so against one or the other? I own a company that is based in Technical Skiing outerwear. We all use Macs except for our accountant. Sure we poke fun at eachother but at the end of the day we have better things to do with our time then to actualy get worked up about what computer people use. Macs are great for design and yes, as toys. PC systems have been lacking in the world of desktop publishing and design for many reasons. They do work but it is just not as fun to use a PC over a mac and what is wrong with a little excitment at work? Our accountant swears by a PC for work in Microsoft Office programs and Quickbooks. I do not even know much about what he does but I know his computer works great. Anyway, really people please read over what you guys are writing.. it makes me laugh for sure.

I have had my Iphone for a few weeks, took 5 minuets to set up on my exsisting account and my mail works fine. Oh, and hopfully mac will fix the fact that it is also fun, we don’t want that now do we.

Finally, for the person (I am sure it was richard again) that thinks mac makes crap you have to hand it to them. The crap they make is so well designed and functions so good that people love it. Sounds crazy I know. You do not see people getting all google eyed over the newest Dell m
